Animals

Ben Affleck finally, and unfortunately, has a stAIn on his directing career. Aside from the obvious, the thing that pissed me off the most about this movie was somehow not that it’s an awful Los Angeles movie but that it’s a downright abysmal remake of High and Low that pretends it isn’t. The thrills are completely overshadowed by Affleck’s horrific acting and the story’s sense of urgency, or lack thereof. I can’t believe how far one of the 21st century’s best has fallen.

The Weight

Sneaky one of the best films of the year. THE WEIGHT exacts a heavy toll on its viewer and that’s because it’s one of those movies that very few will see, but if you do you’ll feel the pressure to tell everyone you know about it. Ethan Hawke continually proves he’s one of the most underrated actors in the business by giving a performance that has an indescribable amount of weight behind it. Is it perfect? No. But, not everything needs to be.

Practical Magic 2

I think the writers misunderstood what made the audience find magical about the first film.

Undertone

As the rest of the world has already said about this film, it has incredible sound design. I’m also pretty sure no one involved in this has ever listened to a podcast. I would have loved to have seen these stories played out in live action and not just done as an audio book in the wrong medium.

Fall 2: Deadpoint

The first film isn’t incredible by any means, but it at least builds suspense and keeps it going the whole time. This time around they made things a lot more complicated than they needed to be which in turn, strips away all of the suspense. A movie where two girls are stuck on a cliff was somehow so boring… If this was shot on location, I’ll give them a break. If it’s all a sound stage, I won’t.

The Dog Stars

Scott, Brolin, Qualley, and Elodri. The stars are all here in a mix that I thought would work really well, and it might have if Ridley wasn’t a near 90 year old man that has quickly lost the plot. I loved the parts that were basically a zombie apocalypse without the zombies but the stuff that was shoehorned in between seemed to be from an entirely different reality. Overall, things get weird when they should have stayed firm, or at least given a different conflict.

Matchbox: The Movie

This is a prime example of a movie taking itself too seriously. How do you possibly fumble John Cena and a toy car brand by making it a movie about tracking down a nuclear warhead? Like seriously, I’m going to spend this entire sentence flabbergasted by the fact that they didn’t make this more for kids. They didn’t even utilize Sam Hargarave’s clear talent in the action realm here. The action was so dull, sloppy, and almost unimportant to the plot, because there wasn’t one. If only they would have chosen a side. It’s almost like the powers that be saw Fast X and wanted to remake it with just Cena. If you’re gonna use an IP that comes in second place, try not to make it something that might come in last.

Faces of Death

This movie pissed me off. I was so hooked by the premise and even the first third of this movie. It then becomes the most annoying, incompetent plot I have seen in a long time. The main character is so dumb and she doesn’t do herself any favors in her performance either. Big props for casting Dacre Montgomery in the role that they did and I’m glad they didn’t hold back on showing the horrors of the videos. There’s a lot of potential here that was left on a drawing board somewhere, I can feel it.
